If not for a big mistake by the Denver Broncos and a fax machine, there wouldn't even be a conversation about Elvis Dumervil-being on the open market.
But, late Friday afternoon, a mistake happened and Dumervil-went from being extended to becoming the best free agent pass rusher available. The dominating defensive end was scheduled to make $8 million dollars.
The Lions, after Cliff Avril's departure, just happen to need a new defensive end. There's been a thought that Detroit plans to go cheap to replace Avril and Kyle Vanden Bosch, but a major proven difference maker like Dumervil was never expected to become available. He could take Detroit's defense to the next level, and would certainly be worth a sizeable investment.
In the name of staying aggressive, Martin Mayhew should already be on the phone, figuring out if it's possible to work Dumervil into the fold for 2013. Yes, there are salary cap realities, but if the Lions are serious about winning a Super Bowl, they would be explo...
