Brennan Boesch's days with the Detroit Tigers are over.
The Tigers released the 27-year-old outfielder Wednesday morning.
Boesch suffered an oblique injury during batting practice early in spring training, which limited his playing time. He had been competing with Andy Dirks, Quintin Berry, Avisail Garcia, Jeff Kobernus and Nick Castellanos for a job in left field.
"There just wasn't the need for another left-hand hitting outfielder," Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski told reporters in Lakeland, Fla.
Boesch has been a mainstay in the Tigers outfield since 2010. He hit .283 with 16 homers in 2011.
Partly because of injuries, his production fell off last season, when he was kept off the postseasn roster.
