A new scam is making the rounds, targeting lottery players with fake Mega Millions “special drawings” and promises of massive jackpots—sometimes as high as $5 billion. These claims are completely false. The largest legitimate U.S. lottery jackpot ever was around $1 billion, not $5 billion.
How the Scam Works
- Victims receive emails, texts, or social media messages claiming they’ve won a prize
- Scammers ask for upfront fees or taxes, or send counterfeit checks and request money back
- They use official-looking logos and language to appear credible
