A dramatic rescue unfolded Sunday afternoon on the frozen Straits of Mackinac, where whiteout conditions and dangerously unstable ice put a man’s life in serious jeopardy. According to Mackinac Island Fire Chief Jason St. Onge, the department received word around 4:40 p.m. that an individual had wandered nearly a mile offshore and become lost in near-zero visibility.
The situation worsened when the lost man reported he had reached open water and could no longer move.
