The impact of this summer’s wildfire smoke may have gone far beyond hazy skies and air quality alerts. A new analysis from the Anderson Economic Group estimates that smoke drifting into Michigan from wildfires in Canada and northern Minnesota has resulted in more than $4 billion in economic losses across the state.
Researchers say the losses stem from canceled outdoor events, park and recreation closures, reduced tourism, and fewer visits to businesses that rely on outdoor activity. The report also points to declines in customer traffic at destinations such as car dealerships, agricultural businesses, and tourist attractions.
