A 71-year-old retired attorney, Carol Romej, successfully climbed Mount Kilimanjaro just nine months after undergoing emergency back surgery. Romej had spent months training for the trek before suffering a serious fall on a Lake Michigan sand dune that left her with a herniated disc and forced her to postpone the adventure.
After surgery and months of rehabilitation, Romej resumed training and reached the summit of Africa’s tallest mountain on June 22.
