You may not consider competitive eating a sport. However, it is. Look it up.
We are witnessing one of the greatest runs by an American athlete in human history. Joey Chestnut continues to age like fine wine and making extremely difficult food challenges look like layups.
Over the weekend, he was in St. Louis, MO taking on the Junk Yard Dog Challenge at the Salvage Yard Bar and Grill.
The challenge is eating an 8-pound deep dish pizza in 45 minutes. Well, he did it in less than 15 minutes. A little over 12 minutes to be exact.
Chestnut spoke to local media after the event.
“I realize how lucky I am. I went to school for engineering, worked in construction management. That was real work, answering nasty emails and the traffic,” Chestnut said. “Now, I’m really lucky. I get to travel around, eat food, see other people eat food. I like to compete and see a lot of happy people.”
He currently holds more than 50 competitive eating records.
This type of dominance is equivalent to Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls teams in the 1990’s. It’s similar to Brady and Belichick’s Patriots teams in the 2000-2010’s.
On an individual level, it’s hard to say if we’ll ever see another competitive eater like Joey Chestnut.
