Multiple news outlets reported that a couple Grand Rapids business corridors are set to receive improvements aimed at boosting local businesses and making streets safer for pedestrians.
City officials announced plans for a $1.7 million project on the West Side that will add three gateway arches marking the entrances to the Stockbridge, West Fulton, and Leonard business districts. Construction is expected to be completed by spring 2027.
Meanwhile, along Michigan Street on the city’s east side, new pedestrian safety upgrades are planned. The design is to make it easier for people to cross the street safely.
People immediately ran to the comments under both posts on social media to share their displeasure.
One person said, “Let me fix the headline. “City Of Grand Rapids Wastes $1,700,000.00 Of TAX PAYER Money”.
Another person in the comments said, “Welcome, but good luck finding any parking”.
City leaders say the projects are intended to create a more welcoming environment for visitors, support local businesses, and strengthen neighborhood corridors throughout Grand Rapids.
