Yesterday, the world of college sports was rocked when 26 men were charged by federal prosecutors for “participating in a conspiracy to bribe and manipulate college basketball games involving then-active college athletes.”
The 70-page indictment alleges the “existence of a gambling ring” that drew in at least 39 athletes playing for “low and mid-major schools.” Of those players, 20 were charged. Four players are accused of helping to “fix three DePaul games,” and 16 other schools are said to also be involved.
There’s a local tie to the investigation. According to WOOD TV, Markeese Hastings is one of the defendants named in the federal indictment. He went to Godwin Heights High School before playing collegiately at both Western Michigan and Robert Morris.
