West Michigan lost a true television icon this week with the passing of Buck Matthews, a beloved WOOD TV8 alumnus who helped shape local broadcasting for generations.
Matthews joined WOOD TV8 in 1961 and quickly became a familiar face in living rooms across the region. Though not formally trained as a meteorologist, his warm personality, humility, and sense of humor made his weather forecasts must-watch TV. In 1971, he expanded his impact with The Buck Matthews Show, where his easygoing interview style allowed guests to shine.
