Drivers across Michigan may want to keep both hands on the wheel—Operation Ghost Rider is underway. The statewide enforcement campaign is targeting distracted driving, with police using unmarked vehicles to spot drivers who are texting, scrolling, or otherwise not paying attention behind the wheel.
Once a distracted driver is identified, marked patrol cars step in to make the traffic stop. The crackdown comes during Distracted Driving Awareness Month and coincides with Michigan’s 2023 hands‑free law, which makes it illegal to hold a phone while driving—even while stopped at a red light.
