The Detroit Red Wings announced Wednesday that franchise icon Steve Yzerman is stepping down as general manager after seven seasons leading the club’s front office. Yzerman will transition into an advisory role with the organization while the search begins for a new head of hockey operations.
Yzerman returned to Detroit in 2019 with hopes of rebuilding the Red Wings into a contender, but the team was unable to end its playoff drought during his tenure as GM.
Team CEO Chris Ilitch thanked Yzerman for his lifelong contributions to the franchise, while Yzerman said his commitment to the Red Wings and the Detroit community “will never waver.”
