NFL Legend John Madden Dies at 85

The world of football, broadcasting, and gaming lost a titan—as we’ve learned NFL legend John Madden has passed away at the age of 85. Madden, perhaps most known for his eponymous video game, was also a Hall of Fame coach—and was widely considered to be one of the best broadcasters on television.

Madden coached the Oakland Raiders to a Super Bowl title in 1976—and seven AFC title games in total. But though his legacy on the sidelines could never be disputed, neither could the endearing, straightforward personality that evolved into one of the most singular voices in sports broadcasting.

Madden lent a level of authority to game calling and, before he was done, had covered 11 Super Bowls—winning an unprecedented 16 Emmys during his illustrious television career.
